We work on gastrointestinal parasites and how they interact with the host diet, immune system, and microbiome. We have a particular interest in dietary phytochemicals and how they modulate mucosal immune function during parasite infection. We also work on disovering and characterising novel anti-parasitic compounds from natural plant sources, basic host-parasite interactions, and how helminths regulate host inflammatory responses. Our work encompasses in vitro systems and both small (mice) and large (pig, cattle) animal models.

I am currently PI or work-package leader on the following projects:

Novel dietary additives for control of intestinal parasites (DFF-FTP 2018-2021)

SEAPAR: Bioactive products from seaweed for parasite control (GUDP, 2017-2021)

Parasites and Plants: Exploring the mechanistic activity of a bioactive livestock forage (DFF-FTP, 2016-2020)

ParaGut: Parasites, Diet and Gut Health (DFF-FTP, 2015-2019)

Immune modulating effects of parasites and plants: towards a novel treatment for inflammatory diseases (Lundbeck Foundation, 2014-2017)

Anti-parasitic and immune-modulating effects of dietary plant secondary metabolites in swine (DFF-FTP, 2012-2016)

I currently teach on the MSc courses Animal Parasitology and Human Parasitology, as well as numerous courses covering parasitology for DVM students.
