Bacteriology – University of Copenhagen

Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm seen from above

The Bacteriology research group is a leading international center facility within the fields of chronic bacterial infections caused by biofilm forming bacteria and chemical biology. It is deeply integrated with the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Rigshospitalet (RH) and the clinical departments at RH. The research group hosts the newly formed Center for Antimicrobial Research CAR (financed by the Danish Strategic Research Council) which includes integrated Chemical Biology research.

Research focus areas comprise cell-cell communication (quorum sensing QS) and regulation of virulence factor production, mechanisms of biofilm formation and strategies of immune evasion, innate and adaptive immune responses, bacterial adaptations and evolution and antibiotic resistance mechanisms. Research in CAR represents a multidisciplinary initiative in antimicrobial drug design and development of new antimicrobial treatment strategies.

Work involves in vitro experiments, animal experiments and clinical studies and trials, ranging from basic research to problem solving at the patient's bedside. The intention of the research group is to deliver cross-disciplinary research and education at the highest international level. This is done by widespread international collaboration with leading research institutions all over the world.
